SUSTAINABILITY
AT WILDE'S LEATHERWORK
At Wilde's Leatherwork, sustainability is at the heart of what I do—but never at the expense of quality, craftsmanship, or my customers experience.
I do everything I can to make my leather goods as environmentally responsible as possible, carefully choosing materials, methods, and packaging that reduce waste and environmental impact.
Whether it's using vegetable-tanned leather, making use of offcuts, or keeping packaging minimal and plastic-free, every decision is made with long-term value and responsibility in mind.
My aim is to run a business that respects both the craft and the environment—without compromising on the durability, beauty, or function my customers expect.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
-
Vegetable-Tanned Leather - I use leather tanned using plant-based tannins rather than chrome-tanned leather, which is more harmful to the environment. "Vegan leather" is even worse for the environment. Learn more about the materials I use HERE.
-
Locally Sourced - Locally sourced leather and materials reduces transportation emissions and supports local suppliers. Check out this blog post about what leather I use and where I get it from.
-
Eco-Friendly Workshop Practices - Minimised and conscious water and electricity use. Recycling system for workshop waste (paper, scrap leather, recyclable, non-recyclable).

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
-
Recyclable Mailers - Mailers are easily separable and recycled, made from 60% recycled content.
-
Plastic-Free Packaging - I use re-used tissue paper, shredded paper and kraft paper to protect items during shipping, cardboard mailing boxes. I limited use of plastic tape and mainly use a paper-based alternative.
-
Recyclable or Compostable Materials - Paper, packaging and tape are mainly recylable.
-
Minimal Packaging - I keep it simple and reduce packaging to what’s essential for both protection and presentation.
-
Reuseable - I encourage customers to reuse or recycle packaging, including and especially for any returns.

LOW WASTE
-
Offcuts and Scrap - I use offcuts and scrap to create smaller products (from keyrings to mini fobs).
-
Repairs - I offer and provide a free repair service to extend the life of my products.
-
Made to Order - I aim to reduce overproduction and offer custom services by making more items made to order.

BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY
-
Sustainable Suppliers - I aim to work with suppliers who share sustainable values—certified, ethical, and local if possible.
-
Transparent Sustainability - I aim to share my sustainability practices openly in person, on my website, social media and marketing materials.
-
Green Events & Markets - I am interested in working with local eco-conscious craft fairs, markets and communities.
