WHAT LEATHER DO I USE?
I use Regular Grade Natural Vegetable Tanned Sides with a thickness of 3 to 4 oz or 1.2 to 1.6mm.
I order it in ‘sides’, this is the largest available surface area of leather.
“Vegetable tanned leather, also known as "veg tan leather", is leather that's been tanned using natural tannins from plants. The tanning process makes the leather more durable and water resistant, and gives it a unique appearance”
WHY DO I USE THIS LEATHER?
The thickness of 3 to 4 oz or 1.2 to 1.6mm is perfect for wallets, cardholders, purses and light bags.
It’s un-dyed and takes dyes, like the black oil dye I use, and top-coats really well.
It’s strong, sturdy and as it has a tight grain, meaning it will keep its shape for longer.
It develops a unique patina over time with the more use it has.
If you take care of this leather, it will last a lifetime, or longer.
It is the most environmentally friendly leather to use.
WHERE DO I GET MY LEATHER FROM?
I have been purchasing my leather from J Wood Leathers since 2020.
J Wood Leathers Ltd, is a family run leather merchant business established by Julian Wood over 25 years ago.
They are located in Steeton, West Yorkshire. Only an hour from my workshop in Blackburn, Lancashire.
J. Wood Leathers sources hides and skins exclusively from sustainable tanneries worldwide. Leather is a by-products of the meat industry—therefore no animals are bred for their hides. They do not stock rare or exotic leathers.
They prioritize environmentally responsible tanning, ensuring all suppliers comply with strict European regulations. Their leathers undergo REACH and BLC testing to meet British and EU standards, with test results available upon request.
WHY DO I GET IT FROM HERE?
I’ve always had great customer service and no issues with my orders.
The quality of products has always been high.
They offer fast delivery, the least amount of time without leather in stock the better!
They are somewhat local, only 50 mins from my workshop in Blackburn. I prefer to support British businesses rather than shopping for cheaper products overseas.
