British leatherwork has a rich and storied history dating back to ancient times, with evidence of leather being used in Britain as far back as the Iron Age.
During the medieval period, leathercraft became a vital part of everyday life, with skilled tanners and leatherworkers producing everything from shoes and belts to saddles, armour, and bookbindings.
Guilds were established to protect the quality and traditions of the craft, particularly in cities like London and York.
The Industrial Revolution brought significant changes, introducing machinery and mass production, but traditional handcrafting methods survived in specialist trades.
In more recent decades, however, the industry has faced steep decline as more and more leather goods are being produced cheaply overseas, often sacrificing quality for cost.
As a result, many historic British leather businesses have been forced to close, making it all the more important to preserve and support the remaining craftspeople who continue to uphold the country's legacy of fine leatherwork.

Wilde’s Leatherwork was established by myself, 2020, and is proudly based in my hometown of Blackburn, Lancashire.
Every item is handcrafted in my workshop using traditional methods and premium materials. I don’t just make products, I make goods that will last a lifetime, or more.

PREMIUM QUALITY LEATHER GOODS
PREMIUM LEATHER
Only the highest quality of vegetable tanned leather is used.
Each piece has a thickness of 1.2-1.6mm, making it ultra durable
HAND DYED
All main line items are hand dyed using black oil dye, and finished with a top-coat.
Oil dyes keep the leather softer for longer, and avoid cracking
HAND STITCHED
All items are hand stitched with 0.8mm thread using a traditional saddle stitch method, for increased durability.
HOMEMADE BALM
All items are treated with my homemade leather balm, made from almond oil, cocoa butter and beeswax. This nourishes and protects your leather.
